The painting is an impressive early testimony of classical modernism in art. At a time when Lebasque still mainly showed Impressionist paintings in the exhibitions, now the Fauvist tendency is already evident in bright colors and modern abstract composition.
Because of its subjects and the unique joy in his colors and shapes Lebasque was admired.
After his studies he joined the studio of Bonnat. He also maintains an intensive exchange with young painters such as Vuillard and Bonnard, the founders of the artists' association "Nabi" and "Intimists."
In 1903 he founded, together with Matisse and other artists the Salon d'Automne.
The first retrospective exhibition of his work is presented only twenty years after his death at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice.
